This year, the deadline falls at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 31. Up until this season, the date was known as the non-waiver trade deadline, as players could be traded after that date if they first cleared revocable trade waivers, and trades could be completed until August 31.
From this year, however, the July 31 deadline is the only deadline. Players can still be placed and claimed on outright waivers after that date, but trades will no longer be permitted.
To ensure fans can keep up with speculation, rumors and reports of interest, NBC Sport has unveiled plans to broadcast a special show on trade deadline day.
Here’s everything you need to know to keep up with the action on Wednesday.
When is the MLB Trade Deadline Show?
This year has two one-hour shows, both airing on Wednesday, July 31. The first begins at 1 p.m. ET, while the second kicks off at 4 p.m. ET, just as the trade deadline expires.
TV coverage
The show will be available on regional NBC Sports channels. Hosted by NBC Sports Chicago’s David Kaplan and Leila Rahimi, the show will feature reports and analysis provided by NBCSports.com MLB Insider Craig Calcaterra, as well as by a host of MLB Insiders from NBC Sports Regionals Networks.
These include NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic and NBC Sports California’s Ben Ross, who will discuss the latest trade deals involving the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics. NBC Sports Boston’s John Tomase will be on the show to analyze trades related to the Boston Red Sox, while NBC Sports Chicago’s Chuck Garfien and Tony Andracki will do likewise for the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs.
NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Corey Seidman and NBC Sports Washington’s Chase Hughes will discuss the latest rumors surrounding the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals, while SNY’s Andy Martino will provide insight on the New York Mets and the New York Yankees.
Live stream
The MLB Trade Deadline Show will be available to live stream via the MyTeams App and via the NBC Sports website.
Trades to keep an eye on
The market has been fairly soporific so far, but with just over a day left before the trade deadline, teams are expected to make a move, whether to improve their playoffs chances or to fine-tune their roster ahead of the postseason.
As is often the case at this time of the year, pitchers and hitters are in high demand. Mike Minor is expected to be traded before the deadline, with odds on him leaving the Texas Rangers currently at 1/2, while odds on him staying in Texas have lengthened to 3/2.
Similarly, Trevor Bauer is 5/7 to be traded and 1/1 to remain with the Cleveland Indians.
