The tournament will also be played in Malaysia between 20 September and 7 October 2018. India were placed in Pot 3 of the draw after qualifying as the runners-up from the qualification group.
It must be noted that Iran are the runners-up from the 2016 edition where India finished bottom of their group. Incidentally, Iran were in India’s group in the 2016 edition as well and suffered a 3-0 loss.
Indonesia qualified to the tournament after winning their group which consisted of Thailand, Timor-Leste, Laos and Northern Mariana Islands. Vietnam were runners up among Australia, Cambodia and Mongolia.
A total of 16 teams will take part in the tournament which will also serve as a qualification platform for the 2019 FIFA U17 World Cup to be held in Peru, with the top four teams going through.
India’s best ever result in the tournament was a quarter-final finish in 2002.
