Baker Mayfield has a slight edge over J.T. Barrett, as the Sooners QB comes off two monster seasons in which he averaged over 44 total touchdowns, less than eight interceptions and 295 pass yards per game. The senior finished fourth in Heisman voting in 2015 and third in 2016.
Barrett enters his fourth season as the Buckeyes starting QB, already a two-time Big Ten Quarterback of the Year and owning a school-record 100 total touchdowns. He finished fifth in the 2014 Heisman voting but hasn’t cracked the top 10 since.
Last year’s winner Lamar Jackson returns for his junior season after an incredible sophomore campaign which saw him account for 51 total touchdowns, 3,500 receiving yards and 1,571 rushing yards. The Louisville QB aims to become just the second player in history to win the award twice, which would join him with Archie Griffin in 1974 and 1975.
One fanbase who should be excited about this list is Penn State, the only school with two players in the top 10. Juniors Trace McSorely and Saquon Barkley make for a formidable quarterback-running back duo who sparked an unlikely run to the Rose Bowl in 2016.
